Bug Description

3) What is expected to happen in LibreOffice Writer via the Terminal:

is that it looks as it does in Word 2003 ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/185683/+attachment/2145493/+files/Screenshot.png ).

4) What happens instead is the contents on the first page is completely gone. The document was made in Office 2007.

WORKAROUND: Export to .doc.

docx support is not nearly complete yet, this problem should get somewhat better in 8.04 (OpenOffice 2.3.1) and then hopefully much better in 8.10 (OpenOffice 3.0.0).

Actually upstream openoffice doesn't support docx at all, the support that is available is from ooo-build but once openoffice 3.0 is released there will be upstream support for docx.

Chris, I am not really fluent in the terminology you have used. By upstream do you mean Hardy? Is ooo-build the source for building OpenOffice? I have only used the included OpenOffice install from the standard repository. But I have open another docx since that had no images embedded and OpenOffice opened it perfectly. Are you saying this is going to regress until OpenOffice 3 is launched?

Oh, I am sorry, upstream means the official Sun OpenOffice.org. ooo-build is a set patches that go-oo.org makes to the official Sun version. Even once OpenOffice 3.0 is released it may not have full support for docx, as it still has problems with older versions of Microsoft formats as well. However, I meant that it is likely to be better supported than it is currently since it will be officially supported by Sun's OpenOffice at that point (3.0 release).

Thanks for the info Chris, I thought OpenOffice was a fork of StarOffice from a few years ago. Are they merging back to Sun again?

As I understand it OpenOffice is the community released open version and StarOffice is the Sun branded version with a few added extras to it. Since Sun has everyone who commits code to the official OpenOffice sign a copyright assignment form they can use the code in their commercial release of StarOffice. ooo-build is a set of patches maintained primarily by Novell primarily for code that Sun either hasn't committed yet or the person who wrote the code doesn't want to assign copyright to Sun. There are a few exceptions but that is the general outline of how StarOffice, OpenOffice, ooo-build works.

Image "Should be" shows document opened by Word 97 with MS FileFormatConverter
-- not perfect, but shows the idea.

"Bad docx" is same doc in OOo 3.0, textboxes all jammed into upper right corner,
as well as both graphics completely transparent in white area of page.

There are two files attached; one is a docx file, another is a doc file
converted from the docx file by Office 2007. When we open the docx file with OOo
3.0, the table format is disappeared while the table is displayed normally in
the doc file. It is seemed the same bug related to this issue 93842. Please
check to see what the problem is and correct it. Thank you.

Will this important issue be fixed in 3.0.1?

My company has me looking at alternatives for Office 2007 support, since our
customers will not accept current Open Office output due to bugs such as this
one. My company nearly dropped Open Office entirely. It was only kept because
licensing terms could not be agreed with the supplier of the alternative
technology.

I have the same problem. I downloaded novell version and used the extension
for .docx. This helped some but the program made all my files with ruled lines.
Like a ruled piece of paper. if i changed the formatting to endnote. The ruled
lines disappeared. However the relation of text boxes to words continues to be
slightly wrong and requires some manual reformating.

This is a significant bug in Ubuntu. If you need a fix for the bug in previous versions of Ubuntu, please do steps 1 and 2 of the SRU Procedure [1] to bring the need to a developer's attention.
