I can't use ctl+alt+FXX screens with nvidia. Works fine with nouveau

Got this issue after installing 12.04 to MacBook 5.1.
Switching to BIOS boot instead of (now default) EFI brings back my precious tty's and backlight control.

Same behavior on raring with nvidia drivers 304.84, but it's not only a blank screen: the video output if switched off. Please note that the tty is working underneath, if I login and type reboot, it works... so it seems to be a video issue.

If I remove quite splash from grub as someone suggests, I cannot even switch to tty anymore (it remains on desktop).

I have the same problem with Xubuntu 18.04. Bug #1811402
The system boots using EFI v1.10 by Apple, but Grub is used, too. I wonder, how to switch to BIOS boot?
