Bug Description

This is yet another case of a hard freeze which started happening after upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04. The freeze usually happens when using Firefox to access something like a Youtube video. Though this is not always the case.

The upgrade was done about two weeks ago and when I did a update Friday the freeze started happening within minutes after the Desktop was powered up. IE: The problem was much worse after the upgrade!

The Dell is also freezing under Ubuntu 2d whenever I start Firefox!

The freeze is immediate and it has not happened under Ubuntu 2d with any other application.

I have discovered what MAY be a workaround for this bug. I installed gnome-session-fallback 3.2.1-0ubuntu8 on my desktop and [so far] I have not experianced any freezes while running gnome classic. I would like to wait a while to be sure but it looks good so far.

The workaround seems to be solid. No freezes in last 2 days.

Rich, does this mean you can't use Unity for a desktop? I have had a similar problem, but I get a lockup using Firefox or Chrome browser, but I am not sure it is even that. I can make it lockup by just moving the scroll bar in any windows. Then again I try to lock it up and it won't lock. Sometimes it will lock a couple of times a day, then it goes for days without locking up. I have read the syslog and it really does not tell me anything. It is always different. It seems to be a kernel thing.
even when it lock (and I can't get anything to respond to keyboard or mouse clicks, it will go to a prompt when I hit the Ctrl/Alt F2, from there I can run sudo shutdown now, and it will shut down. This gets me away from just hitting the power button and corrupting some files.
It seems in the graphic mode I can't do anything but at the prompt I can.
I installed a new SSD 180gig, reinstalled Ubuntu 12.04 and it still lockup. But it ran about three days before it did.
I am using a Dell Inspiron 1521 with the AMD 64bit. Running Ubuntu 64bit version. I do not have a nvidia graphics card.

What information was used to decide to change
affects: xorg (Ubuntu) → nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu) ?

To: irv

1. If I use Unity 2d I freeze as soon as I start Firefox [every time]. With Unity 3d my symptoms are more like yours.

2. You should open your own bug report for your PC. This is recommended in last paragraph of section 3 here -

Computer froze again while running gnome. Bad.
But it ran fine for 5 days before it froze. Not so bad.

The freeze still seems to happen about twice a week.
Reminds me of the early Windows releases.
I sure hope someone starts looking at this soon.

I have similar troubles. The freezes were less frequent when I upgraded to kernel 3.4.0-030400-generic but they still occur.

I'm running a GeForce 6150 LE and "dkms status" says:
nvidia-173-updates, 173.14.35, 3.2.0-30-generic, x86_64: installed
nvidia-173-updates, 173.14.35, 3.4.0-030400-generic, x86_64: installed

dmesg ends with:
[ 3361.843042] NVRM: Xid (0000:05): 9, Channel 00000000 Instance 00008069 status 0000001d
[ 3361.844898] NVRM: Xid (0000:05): 9, Channel 00000020 Instance 00000000 Intr 00100000

Is there anything we can do to help troubleshoot this?
