Installing them w/ recommends enabled ends up bringing in the whole X stack, including gdm3. gdm3 will do things like suspend systems if the login screen is idle - not behavior server users would expect. The description for nvidia-settings suggests it is only applicable for graphics configuration. Therefore, would it make sense to remove the nvidia-settings recommendation from the nvidia-driver-*-server packages, which are more oriented for server class hardware?
