I'm also having problems with ubuntu 16.04 and nvidia driver 361.42 in a dual graphics laptop.

In my case it installs without problems but after a while the screen freezes and after power off/ power on
I cannot never more use nvidia graphics card. The login screen resets after enter the password.

The dmesg output says:
[ 2.215329] NVRM: GPU at 0000:03:00.0 has fallen off the bus.
[ 2.215382] NVRM: A GPU crash dump has been created. If possible, please run

In ubuntu 15.10 and using 352 drivers never had a single problem.

same problem here, I get stuck in the dreaded lightdm greeter login loop of frustration/death.

had to sudo apt-get purge nvidia* allows me to use the nouveu drivers. decreased functionality though. would love to use the nvidia again.

nvidia install attempt from the additional drivers panel gives this bug.

UPDATE::

turning off secure boot uefi in the bios allows the nvidia module to load properly.

After secure boot is off, sudo apt-get install nvidia-361 works perfectly.

I hope this helps all with this problem!

@Nucleo, I did the same thing with disabling secure boot, but I had to get
lightdm working again with the base driver, and then I still had problems...

I used: sudo apt-get purge nvidia*

But I remembered I had nvidia-352 installed before, but I removed it
without purging it, so I reinstalled it then purged it (I bet there is a
way to purge the config without reinstalling?), then I reinstalled
nvidia-361 and it worked.

I have no idea if the above is relevant, but I figured it's another thing
to try if you're stuck.

Also had the same lightdm looping after login. Did the same solution as Brandon apt-get remove nvidia*
which let me log back in.

Ended up re-installing a fresh install of xenial without uefi secure boot.

Also still having this issue when trying to install the latest Nvidia drivers from the Ubuntu repository. I ended up removing the driver altogether to make it working. Also, I am using UEFI boot.
