Bug Description
Fresh install of Kubuntu 9.04 on a HP G30 244dx.
When I would try to open certian programs (jackctl, quassel, or gimp) or while clicking the "preferences" tab in konqueror, computer would completely lock up. Had to be hard-reset.
Went for help in the #ubuntu room at freenode, someone said that this was the problem.

Found two work-arounds.
The first was to disable the nvidia drivers in the "hardware devices" menu. This made the computer very slow however (experienced this before, know it is due to lack of nvidia driver). So that didn't work well from a usability standpoint. But it resolved the issue at hand.
The second workaround was to disable "desktop effects" in the settings. This could be done while still using the nvidia driver. Disabling desktop effects stops all programs I had found that lock up, from locking up.
