Bug Description
Upon switching from NVIDIA driver (nonfree) 173 to 173 (or vice-versa), the gnome-panel dissapears, my network connection is lost, and the login sound plays. See bug #255461 for further information (this bug was closed and declared fixed, but I seem to be the only one still experiencing this issue)

The fact that gnome-panel disappears is something I can't reproduce and maybe is some residue of #255461. Maybe removing some Gnome hidden directory/files can help.
When a new driver is installed, Network manager says that it disconnected and then reconnected to the Internet and the login sound plays. I have noticed that when this happens (i.e. when DKMS modprobes the nvidia module) udev uses something like 80% of the CPU (according to top).
