[gutsy] ntfs usb hdd not mounted in kubuntu

This bug was nominated for Gutsy but does currently not qualify for a 7.10 stable release update (SRU) and the nomination is therefore declined.

According the the SRU policy, the fix should already be deployed and tested in the current development version before an update to the stable releases will be considered. With 7.10 now released, that policy applies to this bug. See: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

Sorry, I didn't read that. Hope this will help since it's a very annoying problem.

I remember I faced the the same problem after having installed the Kubuntu 7.10. If I am not mistaken this was the complete procedure how I reached a good solution:

1) I Plugged in an USB drive formatted ntfs and waited till the drive's icon appeared on the desktop.
2) Then I Right clicked the icon, chose Properties -> Permissions and unchecked Mount as user (=No) and Mount automatically (=No) and saved the changes.
3) Then I safely removed the USB drive and plugged it again.
4) The icon appeared on the Desktop and in all applications like Konqueror, Krusader ... (the icon of unmounted USB drive)
5) When I left clicked on it for the first time in any of the above mentioned programs it was mounted read-write for me as user.
6) When I safely removed the drive its icon did not disappeared but only changed back from "mounted drive" to the "unmounted drive".

This mounting behaviour described in points 3 to 6 is stable from then.

(It would be interesting to know if it works for other users in the same way.)

Yes, it worked also for me this way. However, if the drive isn't formatted with NTFS it works straightforward, so I guess it is a problem with the way KDE deals with fuse filesystems on external drives

Thank you very much for this solution Vladimir, I have been wrestling with this problem for ages and until now have not found a way to fix it. Funny thing is that unchecking 'Mount as User' is the exact opposite of what you would expect to do!!

I will now go and test it on Hardy and see if behaves the same way.

I can confirm that the behaviour is identical in Hardy. With the 'Mount as User' option checked the drive is unmountable. Uncheck it and full read/write access becomes possible.

Thank Vladimir, your solution worked for me too.

This bug is even more annoying with KDE4, because with dolphin-kde4 you are not able to use Vladimir's workaround as there is no "mount as user" option available with a right-click on the drive.

You can install the package ntfs-config and there you can allow write access for external USB devices. This was the solution for me for KDE4. Now if the panel pops up, notifying me, that a new USB drive was connected, I click open in dolphin and the drive is mounted. (Hardy with KDE 4.0.3)

Hardy has seen the end of its life and is no longer receiving any updates. Marking the Hardy task for this ticket as "Won't Fix".
