notification daemon should postpone showing the bubbles if applications are in fullscreenmode (instead of not showing them at all)

Bug Description

I think this bug is related to the fix for Bug #21172
https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14944
Since the other bug is closed and I cannot reopen it, I file a new one. Sorry if
this was wrong.

When you run an application like totem or epiphany in fullscreen, you don't get
any notification popups. However when I switch to another workspace, where no
fullscreen application is running, I should see a popup.

On a sidenote:Shouldn't I get a popup even when an app like xscreensaver is
running. Since popups are most of the time important, the notification should be
delayed until i leave the fullscreen app.

Thanks for your bugreprt.

Yes, it should probably just delay showing the notification in that case. It
currently does not show it at all. I don't see it as a major issue though
because the notification icon comes up nevertheless (just not the bubble).

What is meant with "notification icon"?

Anyway, with the instant messanger Gajim, you get little popup windows in the lower right corner of the screen when a buddy becomes online (if Gajim was configured for this). However, running one app in fullscreen mode -- even if its window is not active -- prevents those popups from showing up. I hear the audio signal for a buddy becoming online but no visual notification who it is.

I consider this incorrect bahaviour, even if those notifications would be delayed.

Please confirm that this bug also affects notifications which are really lost, i.e. there is no other way to get notified like the "notification icon" mentioned by Michael. If I understand this bug correctly and notifications can get lost for good, I think its importance should not be "Low" anymore.

Please also note that in many cases, a delayed display of notifications is undesirable, so please make such a feature optional.

Still not working in Intrepid. I suggest an option switch: By default, bubbles are suppressed when a full-screen app is in the foreground (and only then!), or they are shown always.

Note that the sound signal of the bubble can be heard always, so it's inconsistent at the moment.

The two marked duplicates of this bug are where notifications DO pop-up while applications are fullscreen, and this one is about notifications DON'T. They're related, but not duplicates. And ultimately, it's a matter of preference.

I want to run a full-screen terminal on workspace 4, and a full-screen Quod Libet on workspace 3. But with either of those open, I stop getting notifications altogether, most of which don't pop-up icons. My Quod Libet has the notify plugin enabled, so this is rather troublesome.

Looking over this bug and the other two related (not duplicate) bugs, it seems this is ultimately a matter of preference. So it is my opinion that an option should be created for this.

Is this relevant anymore? Are there any notifications not being handled by notify-osd?

I don't think so.

As I can see it, the idea of the bug still exists; we don't do any queuing of notifications while fullscreen applications are running, we just disregard them. NotifyOSD has nothing to do with this, other than it probably suffers from this exact same bug (or feature request if you want to call it that).

I'm not so sure it's worth fixing however, since most notifications are just that, and can be safely ignored.

Okay, it worked in Jaunty, and it is broken again in Karmic.

I'd like to see notifications of Jabber contacts becoming online, no matter whether my Emacs or shell or browser is in fullscreen. Is this really an exotic use case?

I didn't find any Gnome option for switching them on, not even in gconf-editor.

I too would like to see notifications if I'm running a full screen app on a multi-monitor setup. Right now, if I have any app running full screen in one monitor, I don't get any notifications even if I have the notifications panel in the non-full screen app window.
