No OSD when adjusting brightness and volume

Bug Description

I am using Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 with everything functioning so far, but after (?) installing evolution, the OSD does not show up anymore when I adjust the brightness and volume. Both functions perfectly fine, but the OSD is missing now.

my setup is the same as the original post, with the possible variation that I use a classic session.

I think notifications were working right after install, but stopped after I did a mega installation of updates and extra software.
