Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

First, the answer to the questions:

1) lsb_release -rd

Description: Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release: 9.10

2) apt-cache policy network-manager

network-manager:
  Instalado: 0.8~a~git.20091005t192303.1d28ad1-0ubuntu2
  Candidato: 0.8~a~git.20091005t192303.1d28ad1-0ubuntu2

3) Description of the problem:

It's an old problem that always affected the interface of network-manager. I never reported it before, but I think it's time to write about it.

To achieve the problem I followed this steps:

a) Click with the right button in the network-manager applet (version 0.7.996)

b) Choose "Edit Connections"

c) Add a new wired connection

d) Go to the "IPV4 Settings"

e) Choose method "manual"

f) Add an address

g) *** Here is the problem: *** In the first field, "Address", everything is ok: the focus is on the field and there is sufficient space to write the IP number. But, after filling the field, when I press enter or tab, the focus is lost! It is necessary to click again in the second field to be able to write on it!

*** Other problem: *** The size of the fields is wrong too! When I use a large ip address, like "255.255.255.0", the field is too small!

4) My sugestions: (i) correct the focus problem in the fields of "address"; (ii) instead of a dynamic size, it is a simple solution to use a fixed size to the fields, based in the largest possible ip address (for example, 255.255.255.255).

There is an adicional problem.

When you finished to fill the "Adress" field and press enter, the expected behaviour will be the focus move to the second field "netmask".

But, when the user starts to type, appears a new box, that recieves the ip number. Then, when enter is pressed again, the ip number data is lost.

After I fill in the fields in the ipv4 settings tab for a static ip address (manual) and click apply the applet shuts down and the taskbar applet seems to be trying to connect. The connection fails and when I go back into see if the settings are correct, all of the fields are empty. It will not accept the entries for a manual ip config.

James,

Something that always impress me about network-manager is the serious bugs of the manual IP4vSettings Tab!

It is a very old problem, that goes through many versions of Ubuntu and, frankly, nobody appears to care about it!

In the past I strongly recommended to avoid network-manager and to manually configure everything with /etc/network/interfaces.

But I think it is time to stop that and don't hide the problems of network-manager anymore. That is the reason I created this bug.
