This problem also seems to affect the "Disconnect VPN" button. It just disappears... :(

I have the same problem mint 18.1 16.04 it came in the update manager

we really need to fix this vpn disconnect and configure

I know if I reinstall the OS from a iso I have it will fix it but it would be a older network manager a lot of trouble

would have watch out for these updates to stop it happening again a fix would be better

I'm also going to add to this.

I have just done a clean install of 16.04 LTS and OpenVPN connects intermittently. Despite installing openvpn, network-manager-openvpn, and network-manager-openvpn-gnome, the "Configure VPN..." option remains grayed out.

In addition, after creating my VPN profile via 'Edit Connections...', I'm not able to consistently create a VPN tunnel to the office. Attached are 2 files: success and failure.

Both files contain pertinent lines from /var/log/syslog with success showing a success full connection and failure showing a failed connection.

In both cases, I get a notification pop-up that suggests that the vpn connected successfully :(.

When the VPN fails to connect, the 'tun0' interface has no IP Address and is in a down state.

So is this issue (Configure VPN grayed out and the "Disconnect VPN")considered a bug or a planned change? Or maybe an unplanned change that has a very low priority to correct?
