Bug Description

Sorry, my English is very poor, but this is very important. I have discovered a bug and the solution for that. Now, my computer shutdowns very quickly.

When the system is shutting down, executes the scripts located in /etc/rc0.d (or /etc/rc6.d if it is restarting). When executes S20sendsigs it sleeps 10 seconds to wait for the Upstart Jobs (located in /etc/init) terminate. But this jobs NEVER terminate.

Why?

They are waiting to receive the event "deconfiguring-networking", but the script who emits this event is "S35networking". It executes after S20sendsigs, so the upstart jobs NEVER receives this event.

The solution:

I renamed the links in /etc/rc0.d and rc6.d:

- S31umountnfs.sh to S05umountnfs.sh
- S35networking to S15networking

It works very well

Thank you so much - I have searched and searched for this solution and tried so many other things I was bordering on despair. I am going to link it to all the other places I have searched.

Sorry, I am not an expert. I have a problem to shut down in Ubuntu 11.10. It never shusts down and I have to use the power off button. Can your solution be used in my case as well? If it can, then what should I do? How do we rename the file you are referring to? Should we use the terminal- if so, what exactly should I write. I thank you in advance for your replies.

I don't believe this is a duplicate of #869635 at all.

On my son's computer (running Precise Pangolin) I have seen this behaviour since I added an NFS mounted filesystem into /etc/fstab, and it was resolved by the link changes suggested by the original reporter.

In bug #869635 it talks about "taking a very long time", whereas this bug report talks about "forever", and "forever" certainly seems to be the behaviour I have seen (well, OK, I only waited for 12 hours :-)

Totally agree with Andrew Mcmillan here. This is not a duplicate. This problem means the computer will never shutdown. I too had an NFS mount defined in /etc/fstab and removing this means this computer now shuts down in very good time. The fix from the original poster will work too.
