Bug Description
Binary package hint: net-tools
ifconfig in net-tools 1.60-19ubuntu1 (Ubuntu 8.04) and 1.60-19ubuntu3 (Ubuntu 8.10) fails to initialize a virtual interface to a zero (0 or 0.0.0.0) IP address:
% sudo /sbin/ifconfig eth0:1 inet 0 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address
This behavior apparently used to work and is depended upon by several DHCP packages, including the default dhcp3, and udhcp, as the way they instantiate or reset the virtual interface to a deconfigured state prior to obtaining a configuration via DHCP.
See Bug #351378 for the full context of the problem and a strace of the failure.
