Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

I tried it 3 times with the same result.
the problem disappears when "sudo rm -r ~/.nautilus" resets the folder icons on desktop to default theme
which explains why I think the problem is sourced in nautilus

Description: Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release: 8.04

Hi,

I've been customizing my main desktop folders (folders on my desktop)
for quite some tiime:

Right click on folder > Property > Click on default icon
and I choose a more representative icon.

Lately (a month) Nautilus has been hanging when opening some of these
folders.

Tried in vain reinstalling Ubuntu-desktop and Nautilus.

The problem was solved when removing the hidden nautilus folder
resetting icons to default. I did it three times (customize, crash,
reset) to make sure.

I have the same setup on another pc and I haven't noticed this problem yet

If it's a bug it's very minor.

could you describe steps to trigger the issue on an hardy installation and add an image used to trigger the bug?

Je peux répondre en français si vous voulez mais je poursuis en anglais.

Answering your question was instructive.
In fact, customizing the desktop folder icon with any proper icon won't
crash nautilus.
I discovered that it's using a photo (3 to 3.5 megs) as an icon that
does it.

Step 1: (step1.jpg) Right-Click on a desktop folder icon (here).
Click on Properties. Click on the default icon and choose one on the
photos (3 to 3.5 megs) as icon.
Step2 : (step2.jpg) Open any desktop folder containing a subfolder. Open
the subfolder. Nautilus will hang/crash.
Recovery: (step3) Right-Click on the previously customized desktop
folder and reset the icon to default. Now Nautilus will reopen
subfolders properly.

To sum up, you can't use a large scale photo as an icon folder.

will it crash or does just it uses cpu for a while to work on the image?

  • a.jpg Edit (63.7 KiB, image/jpeg; name="a.jpg")
  • b.jpg Edit (217.9 KiB, image/jpeg; name="b.jpg")

I once let it run 4-5 min. without any result. So it's a crash.

Besides, it shouldn't be working on the image since the folder (and
subfolder) involved are not customized.
Once a folder is customized with a 3 megs picture, any other
UNcustomized folder and subfolder may cause a crash.

Anyway, I'm sending pictures of cpu resources before and after a crash.

On a more powerful (core 2 duo vs older intel hyprthreading) pc, after
15-30 sec. it did recover.
So maybe it is working on something

Retried on a Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13GHz.
The photo customized folder contained 48 3.5megs pictures.
I opened a non customizedfolder and subfolder.
It hung for 2 minutes, recovered and worked well afterwards.

not sure if that's really a bug, you should not give it a photo as an icon or you should expect that to be slow

I agree.

changing an image to an icon should not be that slow, I tried taking a screenshot and using that as a directory icon and there is no slowdown. could you try to figure exactly what case is triggering the bug? does it depend of the image? or the number of images in the directory where you select one?

  • b.jpg Edit (27.0 KiB, image/jpeg; name="b.jpg")

Maybe the Summary should read: nautilus is slow when using LARGE images
as icons

MAY BE IMPORTANT:
The icons on my desktop are at 75% of their normal size (in Nautilus
preferences).

The JPG picture used as icon is 3.9 megs.
Maybe your JPG screenshot is not big enough.
I sent you one in another mail in case you had mailbox size limits.
The folder customized contains 78 pictures, size 3 to 4 megs each
The customizing itself (reducing picture to icon) is very quick.

I retried today with the same result, a slow down (hanging, no crash)
lasting 2 min. followed by recovery. After recovery everything's back to
normal (no more hanging).

I added a new folder containing only one 4 megs picture, cutomized the
folder with the picture. When clicking on the new folder (or any other
folder) ther was no reaction. The folders suddenly opened 2-3 min late.
So on my pc, the number of objects in the customized folder doesn't seem
to matter.

I logged out of Gnome (no X restart) and back again with the picture
customized folder still on desktop. The slow down occured again (the
recovery effect lasts through session only).

PC is intel P4 2.4 with hyperthreading (same behavior on a core 2).

It's no inconvenience. It's simply strange. It may (or may not) reveal a
deeper problem.
