The problem seems to be related to the search provider, can anyone confirm?

As soon as I search anything in Gnome Activities overview, Nautilus hangs. If I disable Settings > Search > Files, I experience no hangs (of course, I lose file results in the overview when searching, too).

Search appears to be unrelated in my case.

I can confirm this bug. In my case Nautilus automatically freezes if I use the search in Nautilus or if I search for files in overview. I haven’t been able to catch the output or why it freezes. I have upgraded from 22.04 and previously from 21.10. As a heavy user of Nautilus for my work this is a bit of a blocker at some times and reduces productivity, especially because I can’t search or filter files.

Resetting Tracker3 (the file indexing daemon) seems to have done the trick for me. I'd need a couple days to confirm that the issue is 100% gone, but there's definetely something wrong with Tracker3, my data, and/or the new version of Nautilus in Ubuntu 22.10:

tracker3 reset --filesystem

DISCLAIMER: the above command will reset Tracker3 database, and trigger a reindex, which might take some time and consume a fair amount of CPU/resources depending on the configuration and the amount of files to reindex.

This fixed it. Search/Filter now works fine in Nautilus. I hit another issue just before I checked this bug report, in which Nautilus couldn't find any files and crashed. Obviously an issue with tracker.

Unfortunately, after several hours/days, the issue reappears. It's as if when Tracker3 is doing some more heavy reindexing in the background, when the laptop is not in use, it hangs.

In my case the issue is definetely with Tracker3; Nautilus hanging is a side effect of not being able to communicate with Tracker (although it should handle it more gracefully, for sure!).

When tracker3 hangs, checking its status with

  tracker3 daemon

gives a timeout error after several seconds.

Whenever I face the issue, I'm doing a

  tracker3 daemon -k

to kill the daemon, followed by a

  tracker3 daemon -s

to start it again.

That works, without having to reset the index completely... until tracker3 hangs again.

Same happened now to me. I have also caught this error:

ERROR:../src/nautilus-file.c:610:nautilus_file_new_from_filename: assertion failed: (filename[0] != '\0')
Bail out! ERROR:../src/nautilus-file.c:610:nautilus_file_new_from_filename: assertion failed: (filename[0] != '\0')
fish: Job 1, 'nautilus' terminated by signal SIGABRT (Abort)

It crashes right after launching the Nautilus. As if no files are present.

I am having the same issues, resetting tracker3 solves momentarily the issue, but after a time it comes back.

Also, I can't open a second Nautilus Window (from a bookmark in the dock), and when I try that Nautilus crashes.

Same here! Nautilus freezing by itself randomly... If I start a search, freeze instantly! Reopen only killing the process...

any viable workaround??

When in Nautilus, I select a .docx file and press space bar for previewing, then the machine freezes. Only remedy is to reboot. It's a fully reproducible freeze not random.
I tested with various .docx file and one specifically made for that and issue is the same. These .docx files open perfectly well in FreeOffice 2021.

If you tell me how to produce a process dump I' ll add it.
