this patch is improved version of brunoqc patch, allowing also for version names containing "~", like:

Just checked it out and it still happens on 20.04:

With recent, I was not talking about 20.04, which is NOT recent. See https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nagios-plugins-contrib for newer releases.

(speaking with my debian maintainers hat on, I'm not feeling responsible for fixing bugs in ubuntu)
