mp32ogg does not seem to work at all

Well, I won't belabor the point anymore. mp32ogg just plain does not seem to work. No real error message, it installed normally, the mp3 files are perfectly valid mp3 files, and I've tried all the permutations of commands that seem sensible based on the man page.
