Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-games

(Ubuntu 8.10)
(gnome-games 1:2.24.1-0ubuntu2)

Start Free-Cell and make it full-screen.

Exit the game and re-start. It is still full-screen.

Press F11 to exit full-screen.

Expected : the app changes to a window

Got : the app changes to a window but flicks straight back to full-screen.

It is then impossible to exit full-screen or access the menu.

confirmed that only happens with freecell though, I've tried to reproduce the same with mahjongg and that works ok. will look upstream thanks for reporting.

Problem: Can't exit fullscreen mode in Aisleriot Solitaire (Ubuntu 8.10).
Just ran into this myself. Reloaded one of my systems with 8.10 and installed all updates. After playing a few rounds of Solitaire for the first time since the reload, I tried to exit full screen mode and could not. Pressing F11 or clicking on the Leave Full Screen button caused the window to resize then go back to full screen. Only way to exit was Alt+F4.

I logged out and logged back in as another user (my wife). Solitaire started in non-fullscreen/non-maximized mode. I pressed F11, played two hands then pressed F11 again. Worked fine. Logged out then logged in as myself. Problem still there.

Solution:
1. Open terminal.
2. Start gconf-editor (don't use sudo).
3. Navigate to Apps->Aisleriot.
4. Locate the "maximized" key and ensure it is unchecked.
5. Locate the "fullscreen" key and ensure it is unchecked.
11. Exit gconf-editor.
12. Start Aisleriot Solitaire. It should come up in non-fullscreen/non-maximized mode.

Confirm on Solitaire FreeCell 2.24.1.1
When Fullscreen is on, it is not possible to remove it.
It flickers then back to full screen.

You can use the workaround posted by John at https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/metacity/+bug/296028/comments/4 for disabling the fullscreen for now, thanks.

another workaround is to move or resize the window in that brief moment that the window is un-fullscreen (ie, hit F11 and then _quickly_ grab one of the window decorators to move or resize)

This method does require fast mousing skills, but is doable since another aspect of this bug is that the window, for the brief moment that it is un-fullscreened, always shows up in the upper left hand corner.

ps - I added AisleRiot to the title, since thats the name of the program. I was trying to make it easier for searches.

Can anyone tell me if turning on disable_workarounds under metacity->general in gconf-editor fixes this?

I'm afraid turning on disable_workarounds didn't fix this issue for me. (Tested only on archlinux)

i think this is the cause (8.04.1):

tail ~username/.xsession-errors
"Treating resize request of legacy application 0x1A00003 (AisleRiot) as a fullscreen request"

this is a huge problem for me as i can not teach my elder relative how to close an application with alt+f4.

found this temporary workaround:

create a bash script

#!/bin/bash
gconftool-2 --set /apps/aisleriot/show_toolbar --type boolean true
gconftool-2 --set /apps/aisleriot/fullscreen --type boolean false

..and when your grandparents call you tell them to press alt+f2, no not one-after-another, press and hold alt,....et cetera..............

My girlfriend also encountered this bug in AisleRiot Solitaire with 9.10. With 10.04 this is unfortunately still true:

$ aptitude show aisleriot
Paket: aisleriot
Zustand: entpackt
Automatisch installiert: nein
Version: 1:2.29.6-0ubuntu1

I think the workaround moli posted could be a bit more elaborate:
mv aisleriot aisleriot-bin
have molis schellscript named aisleriot and call aisleriot-bin from there after resetting the configuration.

If ubuntu-devs won't or can't fix the bug in aisleriot then please implement the workaround as the current behaviour strikes nasty on any ubuntu novice.

Oh, I just saw, that the metacity bug should be fixed as of 2010-01-20 16:00:10 UTC so maybe 10.04s metacity is just still a bit too old.

The bug seams to be solved in Ubuntu 10.04. I can't reproduce the bug that was easy to reproduce in earlier versions of Ubuntu.
Thus the bug seams to be solved.

outdated version; the double-click perfectly works to swith back from fullcreen (F11 might not be supposed to do what you report, at least since a while). Closing that report.

Well, after over six years I would expect it would be 'outdated version' ! Perhaps it was actually fixed by someone somewhere, eh? Anyway, thanks.

2015 and this is not fixed, yet. I installed Ubuntu to save my mother from dreaded XP end of life. She uses email, word processing and solitaire. Perhaps I should have installed Win 8.1.

Can someone help? Frecell can only be played one time with a reboot required to get off the full screen. Not so spiffy.
