Bug Description

Binary package hint: metacity

When You enable Metacity compositing in the gconf-editor the gnome panel gains a nice shadow.. When you restart Ubuntu the composited shadow disappears until you disable and then re-enable Metacity Compositing in the gconf-editor.
The graphics driver I am using is Vesa.
This bug was present in hardy and it is still present in intrepid.

Can you reproduce the problem and then tell me what "gconftool -g /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager" prints? Thanks.

*true*

Also, like reloading metacity, disabling and re-enabling the "compositing_manager" option also fix the problem.

@Thomas: your command outputs true; the problem is only with the shadow around the panel; not around windows or anything. Funny little bug:-)

Also, it affects newly created panels (they don't get any shadow until metacity is reloaded or the option is disabled and enabled again).

Thanks for adding the upstream task, this is not a blocker for jaunty though rejecting the nomination.

Happens in Ubuntu 11.04, classic desktop using metacity.
I made a workaround for this by writing a small script and adding it to gnome-session-properties with --replace parameter

#!/bin/bash
sleep 1 # Let gnome-panel have 1 second to register
