As for earlier releases, I haven't tested this, but having written the
original logic in the mdadm's failure hooks in the initramfs, I can
tell you that the code handling is present in:
 * 8.04 (via a point release/SRU)
 * 8.10
 * 9.04
 * 9.10
 * 10.04
