Bug Description

Binary package hint: mail-notification

On my Ubuntu 8.10 Gnome, I've installed mail-notification with Synaptic.
On one of my computers, it runs perfectly, and notify all my mailboxes.
On the other, it doesn't notify any mail, but Thunderbird collect them without error.

I've re-installed mail-notification. But it doesn't change anything.

The icon flashes and when I put my mouse over, the tray says "*******:impossible d'encoder en Base64 : overflowed buffer"

On the other computer, all the parameters are the same, after verification.

I tried to install some packages, but I don't understand which ones.

Thank you.

If I start it in a console, then I cross my mouve over the icon, I have a message in a console :
** Message: ATK_ROLE_TOOLTIP object found, but doesn't look like a tooltip.

I only have this message on the computer which has the problem.

I have also seen this on my Jaunty installation since the last two days.
I can work around this by changing the authentification mechanism (System -> Mail-Notification-Settings -> Account properties -> Connection -> Mechanism) from "Automatic" to something else (USER/PASS, APOP, CRAM-MD5 worked for my account). The error message appears also when I select DIGEST-MD5, so this is obviously the authentication method that gets selected when "Automatic" is chosen.

Two days ago a security update to the libsals2-2 package was installed, since this library seems to contain implementations for these authentification protocols, it may have caused the problem.

Kind regards,
Jan

I can confirm this problem in Hardy. In case it's helpful, the English version of the error message is:
"[email address]: unable to encode Base64: overflowed buffer".

I can also confirm Jan's suspicion that the recent libsasl security update appears to be responsible. I re-installed the previous version of libsasl and now mail-notification is working fine again.

Ich have the same error with the german t-online. The solution is to change the login mechanism from "autodetect" to "user/pass".
