Bug Description

Copy of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/390959 for extra information. As described on there:

Microsoft Digital Media Pro keyboard interferes with certain games. Ubuntu seems to see the keyboard as a joystick control. Package Joystick Calibrator 1.5.6 confirms by listing Microsoft Digital Media Pro Keyboard as a joystick device on /dev/input/js0

Behaviour includes taking over control of any joystick enabled games and continuously pushing control to the left or causing a menu selection to continuously move down or up. Affected games that I know of so far include Tux racer, Alex the Alligator, Track mania Nations forever (wine) and Final Fantasy 8 (wine).

A workaround is to run Joystick Calibrator, click on Calibrate and save settings. This seems to 'calibrate' the keyboard properly and stops it from interfering with games.

12.04 alpha live USB.

Brad Figg (brad-figg) wrote : Test with newer development kernel (3.2.0-23.36)

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request.

We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel than the one you last tested when this issue was found. Please test again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not.

You can update to the latest development kernel by simply running the following commands in a terminal window:

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released.

If you want this bot to quit automatically requesting kernel tests, add a tag named: bot-stop-nagging.

Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.

themusicalduck, thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your description and the title didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Sorry Christopher, I thought I had given the bug at least a descriptive title but it seems like it had only gone through as "title".

Also copied the details from the old bug report onto the description for this one, since almost no details have changed except for the version of Ubuntu. Hope this is better.

themusicalduck, if you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
