1002:9710 No more HDMI audio in 12.04

I had the computer connected via HDMI, and after installing ATI's proprietary drivers, I now have sound again.
In 10.04, I did not have the propietary drivers installed.

Yes, the audio output via HDMi on ATI cards was disabled by default upstream, due to some graphics issues that were caused with it enabled on some cards.

As Luke said HDMI audio on Radeon hardware has been disabled by default by the upstream kernel developers, as it causes blank screens on a lot of systems. You can re-enable HDMI audio by adding "radeon.audio=1" to your GRUB boot options. There are reports here in Launchpad and on Phoronix that this also fixes the fast video playback problem.

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. From a terminal window please run:

apport-collect 912866

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

Setting it to radeon.audio=1 does bring back audio with no apparent side effects.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request.

We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel than the one you last tested when this issue was found. Please test again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not.

You can update to the latest development kernel by simply running the following commands in a terminal window:

    sudo apt-get update

@SiRiusCb (xlat) - if you are indeed using the xorg Intel driver then you have a different bug. This bug is about the xorg ATI Radeon driver.

To check what hardware you have (and thus which driver you are using) run these commands:

lspci |grep Radeon
lspci |grep Intel

I you see Radeon and not Intel then this is your bug. If you see Intel and not Radeon then this is not your bug.

I also use the open-source Radeon driver with no hdmi-audio, but in Settings / Sound / Output the "HDMI / Displayport builtin audio" is listed. Does this contradict the statement that hdmi audio output is disabled?

I tried booting without and with the suggested option "radeon.audio=1", with no difference.

I also used the "test" option in the Settings / Sound configuration screen.

In addition to my previous post: Other signs that I may have another problem:
- no audio with the proprietary driver
- eld_valid = 0 in /proc/asound/card1/eld#0.0
- ION-based motherboard

ELD stands for EDID-Like Data. eld_valid=0 is a known issue in ALSA which has just been fixed upstream, but should only result in Radeon's multichannel audio being unavailable over HDMI. Stereo audio should still work with the radeon.audio=1 kernel boot parameter. If you have no audio with the proprietary driver then you definitely have a different bug. Isn't the ION an NVIDIA platform? Are you sure you were using the open-source Radeon driver and not the open source nouveau driver? Which proprietary driver did you try?

The upstream 3.13 kernel is currently under development. The radeon.audio=1 kernel boot option will no longer be necessary with this kernel. Instead, HDMI audio on ATI/AMD Radeon cards can be enabled and disabled on the fly by typing the following in a terminal window:

xrandr --output HDMI-0 --set audio on

or

xrandr --output HDMI-0 --set audio off

If your HDMI port is numbered differently (type "xrandr" to check) - you might need to change HDMI-0 in the above command to HDMI-1 or HDMI-2.

Martin Albisetti, the WORKAROUND requirements have been documented in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver#HDMI_Audio . I know the AMD HDMI maintainers are working towards HDMI being on and usable without problems by default, but for the foreseeable future, the WORKAROUND would be in place.
