Bug Description

I upgraded the Ubuntu 8.04 system, but I don't recall when. After February. I run linux-image-2.6.24-14-generic i386, which is the most stable. (The newer kernels [-15, -16] have a quirk with HAL.)

The sound played by the system is very Faint. I have to put the volume to maximum to "perceive" something through the speakers. The headphone gives me a stronger signal but is weaker than a normal conversation heard at 8 meters.

I have an Asus P5B Motherboard. The sound chip is AD1988A. I normally use ALSA.

I did an automatic upgrade on 20080430 of the packages.

The sound came back!

I cannot identify the packages related to this bug. I can play the signal through the speakers. It is a bit weaker than before though.

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 or 9.04?

I now run:
   Ubuntu 8.10 i386

I get audio with the Asus P5B motherboard.

In the Gnome Menu, the Sound control panel ("System / Preferences / Sound") offers a test button. I tested playback that way.

The working audio modules are:
"HDA Intel AD198x Digital ALSA (Not Connected)".
"ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Arquitecture"
"ESD - Enlighteend Sound Daemon"
"PulseAudio Sound Server" (Playback test sound wiith glitches)

(New bugs will be filed later when I install and test a fresh copy of Ubuntu 9.04a3.)

The following audio modules don't work.
HDA Intel AD198x Analog (ALSA)
HDA Intel AD198x Digital (ALSA)
HDA Intel AD198x Analog (OSS)
HDA Intel AD198x Digital (OSS)
OSS - Open Sound System
Conexant CX8811 OSS PCM Device (OSS) (Video tuner Hauppauge HRV-1300)

OSS displays this error message:
"audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=chat: Could not open audio device for playback. Device is being used by another application."
