Bug Description

Sound/speakers don't work at all on Asus Zenbook 14 OLED and other similar models with Realtek ALC294.

No solution works. Audio is not muted, tried adding snd-hda arguments - no dice.

This has been reported numerous times, when will a fix finally be rolled out?!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Bug reporting is about finding & fixing problems thus preventing future users from hitting the same bug.

I suspect a Support site would be more appropriate, eg. https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu. You can also find help with your problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/community-support/709

I can't find any other reports about UX3402ZA, but for ALC294 I can see a few and have grouped them here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bugs?field.tag=alc294

summary: - Sound doesn't work at all

Was audio working previously on this hardware and then stopped after a kernel (or other package) update? If so, we can try bisecting.

Note also that the 5.15.0-41.44 kernel has been out for a while now. The most recent kernel is 5.15.0-48.54 so maybe that is worth trying as well.

It never worked with Ubuntu/Linux kernel. It works fine when booted to Microsoft Windows.
I even tried the latest upstream kernel 6.0.0-rc6-next-20220921, no luck with it either.

Got it. Just google for the UX3402ZA, it supports multi-dimensional audio and may indicate the it needs some extra settings for the speakers. The fixup ALC289_FIXUP_ASUS_GA401 may be useful. Could you help try my test kernel debian and update the result for me?

According to the init_pin_configs of the attached alsainfo.txt, this machine has already been applied with the fixup ALC294_FIXUP_ASUS_HPE. But you might need more EAPD setting to enable the speaker.

Please try the following commands to see if speaker works.
sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 SET_COEF_INDEX 0x40
sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 SET_PROC_COEF 0x8800

Remember to install alsa-tools if command `hda-verb` not found.
