Booting with "safe graphics" worked.
And afterwards also normal booting worked.

Could this be something about live system persistence on the usb storage?

Is there a way to completely disable persistence when booting the live system from usb storage?
Maybe a boot parameter?

Following as I'm affected too.

The screenshot in comment #1 is a crash in the kernel's 'typec' or 'typec_usci' modules. Sounds like that might be unrelated to graphics problems, in which case the crash could be ignored.

In my case not even safe graphics works.

The live USB sometimes just boots, and sometimes it doesn't. More often doesn't though.

The same happens to installed system.

Tried upgrading 20.04 to 22.04, same thing happens.

I'm following as well. Affected too. Envy x360 15 2021. The previous Ubuntu versions boot correcly (21.10, 20.04).

Hey to all! Try disabling the following in Bios - Boot Options - Network Boot - set to Disabaled.

Make sure to download the latest Ubuntu 22.04 .ISO. That helped me for my ENVY x360 15 (2021)!

HP ENVY x360 with Ryzen 3700U 15-ds0xxx (2019):

Ubuntu 18.04, 20.04 works without issues.

Ubuntu 22.04 never gets past animated boot logo screen, stays there, turning, waiting indefinitely. I'm booting in Legacy mode.

Notes: My network boot is disabled in UEFI, so that does not help. Safe graphics do not help either.

I have the same Problem on the following Model:

HP ENVY x360 Convertible 15-eu0xxx (3Y5D5EA#ABD)

Before the recent UEFI update form 20.03.2022 the install was possible.

I have been able to capture the kernel ring (attached) for an installation based on Jammy. As seen, the test was run with kernel 5.15.0-37. The problem has appeared with all kernels so far tested in the 5.15.0 series. (Since no 5.15 kernel has ever booted, I have been running the system from kernel 5.13.0 as a workaround.)

The system is in the HP Envy x360 series, with an AMD Ryzen 7 5700U 8-core processor with integrated Radeon Graphics.

The earlier kernel does not support the devices on this system (e.g. correct suspend, card reader), so a solution for the new kernel would be huge boost to usability.

The problem has resolved for me after the update to kernel 5.15.0-40.

Perhaps if the boot media would be updated to include this newer kernel, then the users originally affected by this report would be able to proceed with their activities.

Eric, thank you for all the work, just a question - how did you update to
the kernel? Is it in the updates already or did you have to do it manually?

I am simply updating from the official distribution repository. The 5.15.0-40 kernel apparently has become available within the past few days.

Note as mentioned I am running from an installed system and not installation media. I have been able to manage 5.15 series kernels by booting from the 5.13 kernels that had been previously installed.

I don't know if any precise idea is in your mind, but I think a feasible strategy would be to install from the media of an earlier distribution release (e.g. 18.04 or 21.10), and then upgrade to the current release.

You would then have the old kernel available, from which hopefully your boot would be successful, allowing you to experiment with the newer kernels from the 5.15 series. Hopefully you will have the same experience of booting successfully with kernel 5.15.0-40 once you pull it from the online update.

I have tried further boot cycles with the 5.15.0-40 kernel, abutnd have not been able to achieve successful boot consistently. The problem is the same for 5.15.0-41.

I may have been too hasty to conclude the problem is resolved in the more recent kernel versions (patch levels).

I should have written immediately, but have given up on Ubuntu alltogether.

I also have the same issue on my HP Aero 13-be0xxx (AMD Ryzen 5 5600U).

Strangely enough, but the system always boots just fine if I insert a USB-drive into laptop's Type-C port. Works for both the live/installer system and the installed one.
The Type-A ports don't do this magic, only the Type-C one.

If I remove the USB-drive, the installed system fails to boot with these errors in logs:

ucsi_acpi USBC000:00: UCSI_GET_PDOS returned 0 bytes
BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000058
#PF: supervisor read access in kernel mode
#PF: error_code(0x0000) - not-present page

I have no idea, why the trick with Type-C port works, possibly the bug is somewhere in thunderbolt or USB drivers?

Hello, I currently have the same problem with Kernel 5.15 when installing Ubuntu 22.04.

My laptop is an Hp ENVY x360 Convertible 15-eu0xxx.

I have secure boot disabled in the bios and I have been unable to install Ubuntu 22.04.

In version 20.04 a successful installation was made but it is not installed with the wireless network drivers.

If I try to update the kernel while it is in version 20.04 after the installation I start to have boot problems.

So far I haven't tried the installation again and I really hope that the problem will be solved as soon as possible.

I'm experiencing quite exactly the same situation of Roxnny on a Hp ENVY x360 15-eu0000sl
I had booting troubles with 22.04.1 live usb and also with an installed 20.04 after a kernel update (5.15.0-46)

Anyway I managed to boot 22.04 live usb adding acpi=off parameter to boot options.
After installation and update of 22.04 I still can boot the system just if I add acpi=off
Unfortunately that brings some bad malfunctionings: I can't see battery level, touchpad doesn't work, and it seems from system monitor that just one cpu core is working.

A couple of further notes:
- during installation I had (twice) a grub install failure, I had to install it manually later
- sometimes firefox starts with just a black screen, I have to close it and launch it again

Managed to capture the kernel crash during LiveUSB boot.
The issue seems to be with "typec" module?

with the new Bios update to version F.08 the installation works again. I think this is another case where the manufacturers are unable to program working firmware. The right address for the bug report was hp not Canonical. It is definitely my last hp laptop.
