Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Attempted to install Kubuntu Hardy Alpha 4 using alternate installer. The on-board Attansic Ethernet controller was not recognized.

A later install was uneventful and successful using the _desktop_ installer.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I'm changing the package to linux, which is used to track kernel bugs for linux-source-2.6.24 used on Hardy Heron, as it provides the drivers. Alpha 5 will have a later release of the kernel so if you could test with that and include the full output of 'lspci -vvnn' and 'dmesg' after booting that would be quite helpful. Thanks in advance.

I have an Asus M3A motherboard, with an "Atheros PCIe Gigabit LAN controller". I tried installing the AMD64 server of alpha 5 and it did not detect the NIC during install.

pertinent lspci output:
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Attansic Technology Corp. L1 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (rev b0)

Note: I popped in the 32 bit desktop CD and told it to boot to try rather than install. NIC is good to go on that kernel.

Also note that the AMD64 desktop install works just fine and installs the NIC correctly.

Rob, if you could provide us the information I asked for in comment 1 that would be helpful too.

Hi Rob,

I examined your dmesg output and it appears the atl1 driver is loading:

[ 40.045089] atl1 0000:02:00.0: version 2.0.7

So this definitely seems odd. Care to maybe attach the dmesg output from one of the successful desktop installations? I'm curious to compare the two. Thanks.

This is from the live CD part of an AMD64 alpha 5 desktop.

Just to be clear, during the server install where it detects the NIC, the screen goes red and says it can't detect a NIC. Is there a difference between the installer and the installed?

Hi Rob,

I just chatted with a member of the Ubuntu kernel team. This does not appear to be a kernel bug but rather an issue with the installer. I'm reassigning this to the debian-installer package. In the meantime, the output of 'ifconfig' and your /var/log/syslog file might be interesting to see. Thanks.

Is there a way to get it loaded post-install seeing as its an installer issue?

Hmm, these logs are not very useful since they're from after installation. Could you attach either (a) /var/log/syslog from an alternate installation, *during* the install (you can extract it using "save debug logs" from the installer's main menu) or (b) /var/log/installer/syslog from a system installed using the alternate install CD?

I am confused by the assertion that this is not a kernel problem, given that it was recently fixed in the kernel. :-) See bug 159561; I'll mark this one as a duplicate.

Bruce the log file you have attached shows a version of the kernel that this was not fixed in, please try Alpha 6 as that should have the fix. Thanks!
