Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.3 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I assume this to be an anomaly with my Panasonic Toughbook CF-53 as the
"fail to resume from hibernation" happens with CenOS 7 (1503) using the
default 3.10 kernel, as well as with Ubuntu 14.04.3 using the default
3.19 kernel.

I experience this same problem with an installation using legacy BIOS
settings or UEFI settings

I installed a Samsung 850Pro 256g SSD in this laptop but had never tried
to hibernate it using the original 512g HDD. I'm suspicious of the
hibernation compatibility of the Samsung SSD in this laptop and plan to
reinstall the original HDD and try hibernation again.

Regards,

Replaced Samsung SSD with original HDD. Did fresh install of Ubuntu
14.04.3, installed all updates, including kernel 3.19.0-28-generic.
Laptop hibernates- sort of.

After entering " sudo pm-hibernate " Data is written to disk, screen
goes blank and laptop becomes unresponsive.

The lights for a "power on" state remains solid and does not blink as it
does when suspended. Laptop will not wake with press of the power
button. Power button must be held down until laptop shuts off.

After laptop is successfully powered off, pressing the power button once
more "awakens" the laptop from the previous hibernation state with saved
applications and work on screen from when sudo pm-hibernate was entered.

Swap space is not encrypted

Problem is reproducible

Did not hibernate or resume properly on previous kernels

No difference between hibernate by “ sudo pm-hibernate “ or clicking on gui icon

No difference with “lock screen on resume” set to on or off

No flashing caps lock

Hibernation usually works correctly but sometimes locks with blank (black) screen while hibernating or on resume. Either way, programs and documents left on screen when hibernate began are there when finally resumed or rebooted

I hope I did this correctly...

I thought I mentioned that in my first post, if not; Hibernation has
never worked properly with this laptop. This problem occurs with CentOS
7 with a 3.10 kernel and Ubuntu 14.04 with a 3.19 kernel as well as Wily.

Sean Smith, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one. Could you please report this problem following the instructions verbatim at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel to the appropriate mailing list (linux-pm)?

Please provide a direct URL to your e-mail to the mailing list once you have made it so that it may be tracked via http://vger.kernel.org/vger-lists.html . It can take a day for the new e-mail to show up in the respective archive.

Thank you for your understanding.
