Bug Description

My system suddently became unresponsive so I tried to SysRq s/u/b and I think that's what caused another problem.

Either way, my system hard-locked.

Hi, can you explain why you think this bug is related to KVM?
From the backtrace it looks like an intel graphics issue.
Thanks

@Chris - I'm not an expert at reading kernel stack traces, but I don't think the oops stacktrace looks related to kvm. I just mentioned that I was using kvm when the oops occurred (*). I've edited the title accordingly.

(*) - I know this since I have a script which warns me as soon as an oops is generated.

summary: - Kernel oops related to running kvm (?)
+ Kernel oops
Changed in linux (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Medium

I am also seeing errors like "intel_display.c:3313 intel_crtc_wait_for_pending_flips ..." over various kernel releases from Ubuntu 14.04 and now Ubuntu 14.10.

My hardware is a Lenovo X1 Carbon with an external display connected to the display port.

After the freeze i can restart my display manager (lightdm) and resume my work for some time.
Quite often, this happens when I wake up my screen after a lock or after un-/re-plugging my external display.

Thanks,

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.17 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

just to give some feedback on the 3.17 testing proposal: I'm also affected by the bug reported here (no kvm, both with old and updated BIOS) for 3.16.x utopic kernels, the problem "appeared" after short uptimes of usually 1..2 day.

Now I'm running a 3.17 kernel without a crash for 14 days.

No idea if the bug is really fixed but the system usability has improved significantly by the absence of such crashs ;-)

Please let me also express that I'd consider the importance of this bug higher than medium since many Ultrabooks/Notebooks/etc. come with embedded i915 graphics today.

BR and thanks!

This seems to be the same oops as http://oops.kernel.org/oops/warning-at-drivers-gpu-drm-i915-intel_display-c3313-intel_crtc_wait_for_pending_flips0x160-0x170-i915/

It might be related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1384342, which seems to be the same oops as http://oops.kernel.org/oops/warning-at-drivers-gpu-drm-i915-intel_display-c3324-intel_crtc_wait_for_pending_flips0x165-0x170-i915/

I've added an "affects me" because I'm experiencing the latter oops, but they might be the same thing, and this bug might need merging with 1384342.
