It looks like this may not be specific only to hostap. A co-worker mentioned he had the same problem with an atheros card and there are reports upstream of the same problem with intel and with ndiswrapper.

Binary package hint: wpasupplicant
I can't associate with an unencrypted network through NetworkManager using the hostap drivers for my pcmcia card. This is especially strange because the hostap drivers were written by the same people as wpasupplicant.
I've tried various things including the wpa- options in /etc/network/interfaces. It works just fine with the wireless- options or manually configured. |
card is a BenQ AWL100.
wpasupplicant debuglog gives auth timeout:
<2>Authentication with 00:00:00:00:00:00 timed out.
<2>Trying to associate with 00:60:1d:1f:09:54 (SSID='onenet' freq=2412 MHz) |

Just as I thought. This means to me that this is a regression in the kernel. Reassigning to linux-source-2.6.17 as discussed on IRC with zul. |

2.6.15 from dapper does work with this card, whereas 2.6.17 from edgy doesn't. |

Removing milestone; even if this is a regression and doesn't work, it's too late to fix at this point.
