Bug Description

Fails to detect Sata 2 controller and attached drive. The driver for this is available in the latest kernels. It would be a shame if this didn't make it into the release.

Are you running Breezy or Dapper? Which kernel (cat /proc/version)?
Please attach output of dmesm & lspci as defined in

Requested info:

cat /proc/version output:

Linux version 2.6.15-21-amd64-generic (buildd@crested) (gcc version 4.0.3 (Ubuntu 4.0.3-1ubuntu5)) #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Apr 21 16:42:20 UTC 2006

Also attached:

      dmesg > dmesg.log
      lspci -vv > lspvi-vv.log
      lspvi -vvn > lspvi-vvn.log

System configuration is thus:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
AsRock 939dual-sata2 (1 sata2, 2 sata1, 2 ide channels)
1gig kingston pc3200
80gb seagate sata2 drive (connected to sata2 port)
1 sony dvd-rw(master on primary ide)
1 compaq dvd (master on secondary ide)
Nvidia Geforce FX 5200

I found information indicating that the driver for the sata2 controller was not present in the kernel version included in breezy. So I tried to install beta2 first (the download link was missing for flight 7 even though it was supposed to have been released). Beta2 fails to detect the controller. Last night I saw that the download link is available for Flight 7. All files attached are from flight 7 since it also failed to detect the SATA2 controller on this board.

I added the info to this some time ago. There isn't much time to get the already written fix into Dapper.

As Breezy will never ship a 2.6.15 kernel, I'm rejecting this bug. Feel free to reopen it if you think this wasn't the best way to handle this bug task.

Does this bug still occur with the latest Dapper kernel?

Grabbed the needed parts of the patch for this. It will be in the next kernel update for dapper.

Thank you Ben, that is excellent news. Too bad it didn't make it into the release.

This may not be the appropriate place to ask but I have failed to get an answer elsewhere.

Since this fixes a kernel glitch in addition to being a chipset driver needed to install dapper for anyone who has this board and a single sata2 drive, will this kernel update be merged into the live cd?

I can put the drive on the sata controller, install, download the updates, fix the boot configuration and move the drive to the sata2 controller. But that will probably be a bit more involved than most users can handle.
