System freeze (does not wake from sleep)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
    ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine. Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921, reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security risk for yourself.

Instead, next time the system freezes please:

Looks like it could be the same issue as bug 1917674.

Had another crash and unlike bug 1917674 the keyboard won't respond at all. I tried the ALT SYSREQ (prt sc) REISUB and REISUO and nothing worked. Any comments Daniel?

This is a bug in the kernel that ships with Ubuntu 20.04 so you need a newer one. Try this:

Oh I didn't realize Ubuntu 20.04 has a version of libc that's a little too old for that. You will need to try an older kernel version that's still newer than the 5.8.0 that caused this bug. Maybe try:

Also the "invalid signature" problem I think is caused by Secure Boot. Try disabling Secure Boot in your BIOS.

Did you mean for me to download all 7 of the modules at this URL and compile them?

BTW the system booted this time with the 5.07.13 kernel but it had errors I didn't have time to see.  I guess because I disabled the "invalid signature" parameter. These are the only errors I encountered in the Boot.log:

I compiled the new images that you sent. Linux 5.10.56-xxxxxxxx and received the same error about Libc6 being downlevel, but when I rebooted that kernel it booted with what appeared to be the same errors as 5.13.7.
Boot.log shows:
[FAILED] Failed to start Load/Save Screen Backlight Brightness of backlight:acpi_video0.
See 'systemctl status systemd-backlight@backlight:acpi_video0.service' for details.

I didn't see any other errors. Where should I be looking for the startup messages that I'm seeing?

The "invalid signature" problem I think is caused by Secure Boot. Try disabling Secure Boot in your BIOS.

Also sorry again because it sounds like that libc6 problem is going to keep getting in the way. But good news: Kernel 5.11 has now been officially released to Ubuntu 20.04 updates. So you can delete the test kernel packages with:

  sudo dpkg -P PACKAGENAME1 PACKAGENAME2 ....

and then do a system update to get the official update to 5.11:

  sudo apt update
  sudo apt full-upgrade

Please install "linux-oem-20.04c" and see if the OEM 5.13 kernel helps...

I'm hoping the official update to 5.11 is enough so the suggestion in comment #29 won't be necessary.

Please advise the name of the packages I need to purge. I've tried a lot of different things but haven't found the right name.

Also I have booted 5.11.0-25 and the system locked up when I lifted the lid to resume, I hard to do a hard boot as even Alt/Sysreq REISUB won't work. I guess I'll try Mr. Feng's kernel next.

I don't know all the names of the packages you have installed and need to remove. They include but might not be limited to:

  linux-headers-5.13.7-051307
  linux-image-unsigned-5.13.7-051307-generic
  linux-modules-5.13.7-051307-generic

If you run:

  dpkg -l > packages.txt

and attach the resulting text file then we can give you a clearer answer.

If you experience lockups with kernel 5.11 then please:

1. Wait 10 seconds.

2. Reboot.

3. Run this command:

   journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

4. Attach the resulting text file here.

The 5.11 kernel locks up when left in suspend mode overnight and Alt/Sysrq REISUB will not be recognized either. I have been able to suspend the laptop by shutting the kid for smaller amounts of time and having the system respond again when the the lid is reopened, 1 to 2 hours. But leaving it suspended for overnight will cause it to hang every time. I have booted the other kernel on the system, 5.8.0-63 and will see if that works. I haven't downloaded the linux-oem-20.04c package yet.
Any more advice?

Thanks. The log in comment #40 shows the system sleeping but never waking up again. It's not clear if that's the same bug and just missing log entries or a new bug. To help us figure it out please try:

1. Suspend.

2. Open the lid.

3. Wait 10 seconds.

4. Reboot or REISUB.

5. Run this command:

   journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

6. Attach the resulting text file here.

I was gone on Friday after 3:00 PM and all of Saturday and my first chance to do what you asked was today, 8/15.Here's the file preboot#2.txt.

Hmm, same problem - either that log is missing the crash details or we have a new similar bug in kernel 5.11. Regardless it's probably safe to say the original bug in kernel 5.8 won't be fixed since that's now been officially replaced by 5.11. So whatever the issue is in comment #42/#40 is what this bug should be about now.

I had an automatic upgrade to 5.11.0-27 a few days ago, but the new kernel didn't fix my problem. Here's the journal.
