Bug Description
Installed a 32bit laptop with Ubuntu 16.04. Installation worked fine, on initial login was prompted by Software Updater that additional updates were available - which was accepted.
These appeared to work fine without any issues, however after the subsequent reboot. Get the GUI prompting for a Password - which is entered. It them progresses (disk whirling), with the Ubuntu Wallpaper (mouse cursor occasionally shows and is moveable), however it hangs.
I am able to log on as the guest user, however not as the main user.
First error within the syslog following a reboot is around the free desktop / lightdm.

Additional Information -
The bug has occurred on the same hardware a couple of times now. The installation of 16.04 works, and I am able to use the desktop.
It is the upgrade that introduce 16.04.1 onto the hardware that appears to cause the issues.
After upgrading I am prompted for a password which when entered, starts the desktop wallpaper, and then appears to hang.
Note that I am able to log onto the laptop using the Guest user, and can get to the desktop.
After reading around the 16.04.1 upgrade it appears that there are changes to the lightdm and gnome software - which appears to suggest that my hardware is having issues with these new packages, and potentially a 'permission' issues with the new packages.
