So, I've been doing some digging.

The issue is with the current release of libgdiplus (2.11+git20131008.9732566-5ubuntu1)

Specifically, I think the change that broke things is this:
[5e251c5] Ensure PNG transparency values are initialized. Thanks to
    Tom Hindle (LP: #1296786) (Closes: #741980)

As a quick and dirty fix, you can simply install the Saucy libgdiplus version.
I don't know enough about patching these sorts of things to figure out exactly what's broken though.

sudo apt-mark hold libgdiplus

It seems to works!

I confirm, installing libgdiplus from Saucy fixes the issue, OpenBVE works after this workaround is applied.

A further update from me-
Rebuilding libgdiplus from a straight checkout of the Ubuntu source appears to fix this error.
It would be nice for someone else to confirm this :)

If this is so, can someone trigger a straight rebuild with a version number bump; I wonder if something got out of sync in the build system with libpng?

It is now 3 months later en OpenBVE still don't work in Ubuntu 14.04 out of the box.

Install the original OpenBVE and dependancies, followed by this one [Technically you don't need the original package, but I haven't added any dependancies to this at the moment]
 It'll register as the package openbve-leezer3 with version 1.4.3.0
It should produce a new icon OpenBVE (leezer3), and can be launched from the command-line with openbve-leezer3

The primary issue here appears to be that the new compile of libpng doesn't like several of the PNG files in the menu data. This is what's causing the coredump.

A secondary issue is the crash when clicking on routes. I've worked around this by adding a MessageBox; I think there must be a timing issue somewhere in the original code, but don't ask me where.

Testers appreciated please.

Anyone with experience of turning this into a viable patch reading this bug?

Chris, I've just tested your version on Ubuntu 14.04 32 bit. I installed it and ran it from the Terminal and I got this:

Then I manually created the /usr/share/games/openbve/Data/Plugins directory. Then the program stated, however without textures, and it said 144 files are missing. I was running Anthony Bowden's default route so the files are not really missing, that's for sure. But at least the program started. I assume the lack of textures is closely connected to the problem with libpng.

PS The Hungarian language file is very old in your deb, please include the one from Odakyufan's site.

Something's odd there then, I'll have to investigate further with a clean VM rather than one I've been messing with.
The cause of the error though is that it's looking for the plugins in the Debian location rather than the Ubuntu location (Have you been fiddling with environment variables at all?)
 This in turn means it can't load the textures, and gives the missing files error :)

As a temporary copy the contents of /usr/lib/openbve/ to /usr/share/games/openbve

That should then work correctly I hope....

I have just tested OpenBVE on Ubuntu GNOME 15.04 64 bit daily image and also Ubuntu 15.04 32 bit daily image. These are the steps I did:

1. I ran Ubuntu GNOME 15.04 / Ubuntu 15.04 from a live DVD.

2. I installed OpenBVE from the Software Center.

3. I launched OpenBVE. I was able to select a route and play the game. I had not installed anything else, just OpenBVE from the Software Center! It was a clean live DVD, nothing else installed, just OpenBVE and its dependencies. I got the five error messages that I mentioned in my previous post.

4. I finished driving and closed OpenBVE.

5. I started OpenBVE again.

6. I clicked on a route file in the route selection area.

7. OpenBVE immediately crashed.

This is very interesting because for the first time OpenBVE worked very well, but for the second time it crashed. Maybe when it was loading the route image, which is probably a PNG file?

Starting from the terminal for the second, third etc time gives me this:
