Bug Description

I've noticed since Wily that, after my KDE session has been open for about a day, it freezes several times a day for a few seconds, then becomes (somewhat) usable again right after the following message is displayed in the bottom right corner of the screen:

Desktop effects were restarted due to a graphics reset

Usually, for some minutes before the freeze, CPU usage is at 100% on all cores. This is usually lowered right after the session unfreezes, but gets progressively worse with each freeze which lasts longer each time, up until my PC is unusable without a reboot.

I'm using a Kubuntu 16.04 fresh install with all updates. The kwin version is 4:5.5.5-0ubuntu1.

This happens to me as well. In my case, I have an Ivy Bridge CPU with HD 4000 series GPU. This is a fresh install.

I frequently get these messages after resuming my workstation from standby, and it seems to coincide with focusing / activating various application windows for the first time since standby.

The problem happens to me from time to time without doing anything specific.
I fix it by rebooting the computer.... or executing this command... I recover the triple buffer, because when the fault appears I have tearing again.

nvidia-settings --assign CurrentMetaMode="nvidia-auto-select +0+0 { ForceFullCompositionPipeline = On }"

This problem affects me on Kubuntu 20.04 each & every time I resume from standby. Wondering if this is ever going to be addressed, as it was already reported more than four years ago?
