Bug Description

Binary package hint: kvm

Running kvm 1:62+dfsg-0ubuntu8.
My WinXP guest works perfectly for playing videos or listening to music, but when I run The Rosetta Stone application, after playing a few sounds, the audio just dies. The guest OS seems to keep running just fine, I just don't hear any sound. I can't figure out what's going on. I've tried it with both pulse and straight alsa and that has no effect. I never get any error messages other than "audio: Failed to create voice `es1370.adc'" which is one I always get anyway, even when it is working fine.

I am launching kvm like so:
kvm -M pc -m 512 -smp 1 -localtime -boot c -hda WinXP.img -cdrom /dev/scd0 -soundhw all -std-vga

I get the same problem with qemu as well, so this bug applies equally to both. If there is any way I can debug this further, please let me know!

Hi there, thanks for the bug report.

Is there any chance that you could retest this in Jaunty? The upstream kvm source rewrote much of the sound device interaction code and very well may fix this.

Thanks,
:-Dustin

If you're running Hardy, could you please test this using the kvm-84 package in this PPA:
 * https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-virt/+archive/ppa

Does this solve the issue, or is it reproducible?

I believe that this issue has been solved by kvm-84 in Jaunty. As there has been no further activity on this bug in quite a while, I'm going to mark it 'fix released' for now.

If you can reproduce this issue in Ubuntu 9.04, please mark the bug 'confirmed' and post complete instructions on how to reproduce it.

KVM 1:84+dfsg-0ubuntu11 (Jaunty amd64) has similar symptoms. Once Windows XP is booted the initial sound is heard and audio playback works for some time.

Then, at some moment (10-15 minutes after), the audio stops working while blocking any application that tries to access the audio. The only way to recover the audio is to reboot the virtual machine. The reboot in this audio-locked-up case takes time, as each program that operated on audio device is not exiting voluntarily ("The program is not responding") and must be killed using "End Now" button.

There is no messages in dmesg or /var/log/daemon.

I have this problem in Karmic, with either XP or Ubuntu as guest. I removed the sound device from the guest (which was es1370) but the problem remains.
