Bug Description

Binary package hint: kpackagekit

In Kubuntu 10.10 KPackageKit's "clipboard" icon appears in the tray area very often, like 2-5 times in an hour. Hovering mouse cursor over it gives roughly "checking for distribution updates".

I have set the check for updates interval to DAILY. I don't think this check should happen this often...

Can you please go to KPackageKit -> History to see when was the last time it refreshed your cache?
There is a bug that is already fixed (not in updates yet) which was causing a crash and might be related.

It says cache last updated 12 days and 10 hours ago.

This doesn't seem right, I just updated the list and got the new upgrades. Closed the KPackageKit, reopened and it still says the 12 days. Correct?

Ok so this is probably related to the crash I told you about.
It happens that some "broken" mirrors made packagekit-backend-aptcc package
crash while getting the update list so the last time updated value was not updated.
The package was already fixed and is in maverick/proposed (don't have an ETA
of when this will go to maverick/updates).
If you want enable proposed and update the package this was we can see if
this was related :D

Best.

I took all the PackageKit related updates from the proposed. And now it says that the cache was last updates 49 days 17 hours ago. Wow, did I just pass out for 37 days? :)

The problem still exists. I haven't rebooted after the update yet if that matters.

ok, when you click on "Check for new updates" on the updater interface does it end with some kind of error?
Sometimes mirror that is not available anymore causes the refresh cache to fail.

No errors. Today I last downloaded successfully all updates and manually checked for updates without problems. If I look the history, the cache seems to have stuck on 49 days 17 hours. A max value? :)

Though I no longer see the distribution upgrade of which this report was all about. But something still is not right?

I can confirm this bug in Kubuntu 10.10, getting a pop up message every 15-20 minutes.

This bug also affects Kubuntu 11.04. Everyone in my office is getting a pop up message offering to start the upgrade to oneiric about every 10-15 minutes. This is not only extremely irritating, as the pop-up goes in front of any other windows, it's so frequent that it's only a matter of time before someone accidentally hits the "start upgrade now" button. I hope there's an "are you sure?" dialog but I'm not willing to test it to find out!

This is far, far too frequent. Once a day would be just about tolerable. Once a month would be ideal.

yes, sorry it's very frequent I know,
Apper sould be less noisy about this but still not perfect,
I'm working on improving this.

Ok, I hate "same here" comments myself, but yes, same here. I know that there's an update available. I don't want to update yet, I don't need a reminder every ~15 minutes. This would be tolerable once a week or even once a day, but like this? Not nice. Maybe a checkbox "Do not show this distribution upgrade reminder in the future?" could be added to this notifier? Clean. Simple.
