New install of kde for kubuntu has Invalid create new items

Bug Description

I have recently installed a fresh copy of kubuntu 5.10 and I notice entries in the create new right click menu
for "Text Document", "Spreadsheet Document", "Presentation Document" and "Illustration Document". All of
these options create a file but none of them appear usable. After creating the documents only the
Illustration document opens in an application when left clicked and that is Ark. All the other documents
require an application to be chosen to open them - I assume that would be a Koffice application - if koffice
was installed - which it isn't by default.

Steps to reproduce:
Right click the desktop
Choose Create new
Choose Text Document
Left click the created file

I can confirm this with Kubuntu Dapper. It seems that "Create New | Text Document, Presentation Document etc." produce KOffice documents. Many of us do not have KOffice but OpenOffice.org instead.

Is this still a problem with Dapper Beta?

Thanks Carthik,

I haven't done a new install for a while but plan to ASAP - I shall
download the latest ISO and give it a go ASAP.

No the bug is not fixed in the Kubuntu 6.06 Beta 2, I can still right click
and create a new kword (or kspread or kpresenter) doc on the desktop which I
am then unable to open with anything installed.

These icons are part of a koffice package. The offending entries are installed in /usr/share/templates by the package 'koffice-data'; through this chain of dependencies:
   kubuntu-desktop -> krita -> koffice-libs -> koffice-data

The koffice suite is not installed in the default kubuntu-install, so these icons do not work. Workarounds:
  aptitude remove koffice-data # if you don't need krita
or
  rm /usr/share/templates/{Presentation,SpreadSheet,TextDocument}.desktop
to remove the icons.

Better yet, change them to use OpenOffice instead. In '/usr/share/templates/TextDocument.desktop' for example, change the line :
  URL=.source/TextDocument.kwt
to
  URL=.source/TextDocument.odt
and save an OpenOffice Writer file to '/usr/share/templates/.source/TextDocument.odt' as template.

Some people solely rely on these icons to create new files, this must be fixed!

I tested this in Hardy, and the entries still create KOffice documents. Since KOffice supports ODF, they should create ODF documents, which can also be opened by OpenOffice.org

Still the same in Karmic.

user@computer:/usr/share/templates# dpkg -S TextDocument.desktop
koffice-data: /usr/share/templates/TextDocument.desktop

and krita -> koffice-libs -> koffice-data

I want krita, but I do not want other users of the machine to be confused when creating new documents.

The template files should be installed with the applications that support them rather than being in the common data package. (Still affects KOffice2)
