postinst trigger in output of make-kpkg does not create /vmlinuz, /initrd.img symlinks

Ran the following command in a 2.6.33.3 kernel tree (required for our embedded application)

MAKEFLAGS="HOSTCC=gcc-4.4 CC=gcc-4.4" make-kpkg --rootcmd fakeroot --initrd --arch amd64 --stem "ourlinux" --append-to-version "${OUR_VERSION}" --revision "${OUR_REVISION}" debian kernel_image kernel_headers kernel_source

This produces the expected packages for kernel image, source, and headers, but upon installing the image package, no symbolic links are created (e.g. /vmlinuz -> boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-23-generic), and the postinst script in the package does not contain any commands that might do so.
