Bug Description

I am on Ubuntu12.10 Quantal 64bit with kdenlive0.9-1.

The configuration assistant on first start is showing at the system check step that "xine" is nedded for "Required to preview your DVD".

When there is no cause against, xine should be added to the kdenlive package dependences and automatically installed together with kdenlive.

it appears xine is not required, so it should not go into depends, it should go into recommends or suggests
see: http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-relationships.html#s-binarydeps

Also this applies to debian too.
Please file a bug with an appropriate patch there, ubuntu will then get the change automatically.

@jtaylor

the problem here was that xine is missing by kdenlive, as it tells itself on very first start of it(see description), so the patch is exactly doing what it should do. It add xine to the dependency to allow kdenlive to do one of its standard functions. If xine is not installed automatically the standard function is broken.

Dear melchiaros and Paolo,

It's true that kdenlive should come with xine installed. However what Julian pointed out is that xine is not a dependency of kdenlive, it should be a recommendation. I.e.: kdenlive does not need xine in order to work properly, it needs it to improve it's functionality. Remember that recommended packages are installed by default.

Julian also said that kdenlive is maintained in Debian (the 'base' of Ubuntu), and this bug should be fixed there. There is no need to increase the delta between Debian and Ubuntu for such a small change.
