Also, this only happens on a netbook since KDE defaults to a netbook interface so I switch to desktop interface. Installed 12.04 on my desktop and MacBook Pro and everything works as expected.

Am I the only one having this problem? I've tried reinstalling 2 times with the same outcome.

No, you're not, and, IIRC, natty did that and I had to go to - roughly transated - "dektop effects" -> window decoration -> configure buttons" to have them the "old way".

I got the same on the kubuntu 12.04 I just installed on an old 701.

Thank you! Finally got to install Kubuntu 12.10 and this fixed the problem! For Future reference in Kubuntu 12.10 Go to System Settings --> Workspace Appearance --> Window Decorations, now find a button at the bottom of the windows that says Configure buttons --> uncheck "use custom titlebar button positions"

how do you switch to plasma-desktop? what's the window decoration and workspace theme used after the switch?

Thanks for looking into this issue. To switch I go into System Settings -> Workspace Behavior -> Workspace -> and change workspace type from netbook to desktop. This is the first thing I do right after installation. The Theme in Workspace Apperance is Air for netbooks, but changing to Air doen't change anything.

seems the startkde script has a bug that it uses the netbook settings overlay even when loading a desktop workspace

though really the issue at hand is that the overlay sets this weird button style although I am not quite sure why... needs some investigation
