Just as a further check, I tried writing the image via Rufus & Etcher and got the same result with with both images. I also tried re-downloading the image.

Just tried with the Ubuntu Mate Distro and I get the same errors.

Please update intel-microcode on all supported distros to the latest version from Debian or somewhere upstream.
