The parse_video_opts() function in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/init-top/framebuffer should use "mode_option=$opt " rather than "mode=$opt " when generating the framebuffer module mode parameter for framebuffer modules that use modedb (see linux-source/Documentation/fb/modedb.txt).

Apologies -- the mode_option parameter only applies to framebuffer drivers that use modedb (which includes uvesafb).

As a workaround for drivers that use modedb, you can specify the video parameter like this:
video=uvesafb:mode_option=1400x1050
