looking at the screenshot you are not using indicator applet at all. please right click on panel, click 'add to pane' search indicator applet and then add it to the panel.

Seems like I've done something wrong (I use hungarian translation), I hope you can help me undo the changes. The black bars at left and right are panels, but cannot be right-clicked, and also I somehow removed the upper panel as an effort to remove the left/right panels.

doing this will reset your panels (might help) i actually thought you were
using lucid

$ gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/panel && killall gnome-panel

In the meantime I was able to get my panels back by creating a new user and copying some config files over. This way, I have an audio icon, but I also have an envelope icon. Removing the envelope icon also removes the audio icon.

now I understand the problem you are reporting. the volume icon and envelop are the same applet so removing one also removes the other.. you can remove the envelop icon if you want by sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages. see bug 547132 for further information

Changed in indicator-applet (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid
status: Invalid → New
