Bug Description

Binary package hint: ifplugd

When enabling the radio switch on my Dell laptop, ifplugd is unable to bring the card up due to it stating that the card with an active radio is unplugged.

ifplugstatus output of when the radio is enabled:
wlan0:
    SIOCETHTOOL failed (Operation not supported)
    SIOCGMIIPHY failed (Operation not permitted)
    Wireless: unplugged
    IFF_RUNNING: unplugged
    SIOCDEVPRIVATE failed (Operation not supported)

There does not seem to be a way to have ifplugd bring up the interface

The syslog only prints the presence of the hcid (bluetooth) when I turn on the switch (the switch controls both the wireless and the bluetooth support)

Is there a way to have ifplugd bring up the interface when it detects that it exists, or am I just mis-configuring my computer?

Section from my /etc/network/interfaces:
allow-hotplug wlan0

iface wlan0 inet manual
  wpa-roam /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
  wpa-roam-default-iface default-wparoam
  wpa-mapping-script guessnet-ifupdown
  wpa-map default: none

Versions:
Xubuntu Hardy
ifplugd: 0.28-2.3ubuntu1

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Yes, still broken in intrepid, I ended up doing a work around where I use the Bluetooth udev event to bring up my wireless as my wireless radio and bluetooth are enabled by the same hardware switch.

Is this a Thinkpad T61? This bug looks similar to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hal/+bug/289286

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a fresh boot and attach the resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies Thanks in advance!

Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here.
