Bug Description

Availability: Currently available in Universe, building on all currently supported architectures, see https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/icc-profiles

Rationale: In Oneiric we want to introduce ICC-based color management on the operating system level, using the same architecture as Fedora does. icc-profiles is part of this architecture. Therefore we need it in Main. This MIR is a work item of the following Blueprint:

Security: No security vulnerabilities possible as this is a pure data package.

Quality assurance: Installs without debconf questions (package has no maintainer scripts at all), after installation simply a bunch of color profiles is available. The package is maintained upstream as new releases occur regularly and they get packaged for Debian by Oleksandr Moskalenko (see debian/changelog) and synced into Ubuntu.

UI standards: The package has no UI at all.

Dependencies: None.

what about splitting the package into two, with the one in main holding all profiles being distributable in main?

It is no big problem to split, the debian/copyright file is well-written.

New package version, 2.0-2ubuntu1, uploaded where the binary package is split into two:

icc-profiles (2.0-2ubuntu1) oneiric; urgency=low

  * debian/control, debian/rules: Split package into free and-nonfree files,
    putting the free files into the new binary package icc-profiles-free and
    the non-free ones into the already existing icc-profiles. icc-profiles-free
    is separately installable, for example to make part of an all-free-software
    Linux distribution, icc-profiles depends on icc-profiles-nonfree so that
    on an update to this or a later version the user does not loose any files.
  * debian/docs, debian/rules: Do the installation of the documentation
    manually and not with dh_installdocs any more to do the correct distribution
    of the documentation files into the two binary packages.

Here we can move the icc-profiles-free into Main and leave the other in Multiverse.

I looked at this and it seems OK from a MIR/packaging/maintainability standpoint (though I'd like to see a bug subscriber). But I'm not sure that a binary split is sufficient. I would expect a source split to be required. I'll leave that to doko's judgement as an archive admin as well.

Source split done.

This MIR is now for the icc-profiles-free package (Currently in the NEW queue) which contains all ICC profiles of the former icc-profiles package which are under free license.

The icc-profiles-free packages is uploaded with version number 2.0+dfsg-0ubuntu1.

The icc-profiles package will be changed to not contain the profiles of this package but to depend on this package, so that with an update of the icc-profiles package no files get lost for the user.

Looks fine. Though again, bug subscribers are nice. It would be good if Debian were interested in making the same split, so we don't have to carry this delta. Till, could you ask them at some point?

RAOF, can you let colord depend on or at least recommend icc-profiles-free so that this package makes it into the beta 1? Thanks.

Closed manually, the usual mechanism to close this seems to not have worked. Package is already in Main.
