failed to load 32bit ibus immodules (im-ibus.so)

This is similar to bug 641056, but there may be some need to split the issue into multiple bugs.

I did that, and it removed my warnings, but did not fix my program. This is still an issue. the im-ibus.so should be getting included in ia32-libs, as there now appears to be some dependency on it.

Also I just verified that this still exists running the latest ia32-libs *20090808ubuntu7.

No, I copied from gtk.immodules file and changed the paths to the correct 32bit paths.
I also made a 32bit ibus library package so that I can use ibus in 32bit programs.

I am also hitting this problem with a 32 bit program. It's name is "QQ" (a closed source ICQ type prog aimed at chinese market).

(kubuntu 10.10) I messed with paths, etc.. to no avail. I did have a few problems with skype, etc when i first installed (a day or two ago), but mostly those cleared themselves up (the 20090808-7 update, i presume).

The "-4" i hear is so great seems to have been already erased from history (missed it by days or hours, lol )

If someone can send me the -4 deb so I chat with my chinese friends, that would be great.

Non native JP, CN users (eg de_CH ) also need a ibus-gtk.immodules file in /usr/lib32/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/immodule-files.d/. Otherwise ibus isn't loaded in 32bit applications.

To summarize:
Users who want to use ibs in 32bit applications on a 64bit system under 10.04 have to do the following:
1. Install these modules in /usr/lib32/: libibus1 ibus ibus-gtk libibus-qt4 libibus-qt1
   → you can use 'getlibs' for this task
2. Create a gtk.immodules.32 in /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/ (see attachment for an example file [thanks Mingming Ren for this])
3. Create a ibus-gtk.immodules in /usr/lib32/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/immodule-files.d/ with:
    "/usr/lib32/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/immodules/im-ibus.so"
    "ibus" "IBus (Intelligent Input Bus)" "ibus" "" "ja:ko:zh:*"

Here's my scenario:

Running Ubuntu 10.10 amd64 as a VM on VMWare. Trying to install a Bitnami native installer for Alfresco.

Tried what itoas described above, didn't work.

Installed the ia32 (20090808ubuntu9), didn't work.

Also tried an older version of ia32 (20090808ubuntu4), didn't work.

Since this is a VM, I am using the generic VGA video drivers, if it matters.

Any other suggestions please?

i see the problem with acroread (adobe pdf viewer)... it's annoying, but at least acroread doesn't crash...

Problem still present in Maverick... makes Machinarium game mostly unusable...

As the disclaimer says, however,

"DO NOT ADD THIS PPA!

This ppa contains unreleased builds that should be moved to a different ppa once they build correctly. This helps for packages that build fine in Debian but fail in Ubuntu."

But it worked for me, so you may give it a try if you're desperate...

Oh, what I meant by that message is that people should use the other ppa's since that is the only one that I "break" since I send all my builds to that one and then move them to their corresponding ppa once they work.

In this case for ia32-libs micove/console or micove/unstable should work.
I update it every 15 days to make sure I get the security updates into it.

Anyway for the ops problem I use an ugly hack to fix it.

The fix I did before that was to change the hard-coded /usr/lib to /usr/lib32 when making the i386 package of gtk+2.0/glib2.0/gdk-pixbuf and removing the RPATH. After doing that most of the errors I saw disappeared. I could not maintain the lucid/maverick version that I don't really use and the Debian version that I really use since all three are at different versions. At this point, I started using the quick hack that works on all three and that way I did not have to maintain an internal version of those 3 packages that was only used by ia32-libs.

Since that time I think gdk-pixbuf should work by itself but I will probably test this soon since I will merge the git commits from ia32-libs from debian to my ppa.

Oh my bad I read the bug report wrong and confused this with a different bug. If it's the immodules problem then adding this to the rules file should fix it.

I have not looked at the Ubuntu package source in a while but I could not find that in the rules or postinst scripts. Best solution would be to use the newest ia32-libs version in Debian since it fixed this and several other issues. I could help with that (if needed) since I already ported it so it could in lucid/maverick/Debian sid and uploaded it to my ppa.

I'm hitting what seems to be the same issue when trying to use Acrobat Reader (acroread 9.4.2-0natty1) on Ubuntu Natty 11.04 64 bit with ia32-libs 20090808ubuntu13:

Yes. Eventually this will be resolved by moving im-ibus.so to the multiarch plugin path, but not for 11.10. We are deliberately not suppressing the warning messages from the libgtk2.0-0 maintainer scripts, since that could have a negative impact on debuggability in other cases.

I am here because I think something is still wrong in ia32-libs in ubuntu natty 11.04.
I didn't suffer this bug when i was in maverick 10.10

It used to work just fine in maverick 10.10 x64, but now it does not.

This is not related to ia32-libs, it is a regression in the behavior of dpkg
(bug #767634).

I've just promoted the dpkg SRU to natty-updates; please install the updated
version of dpkg and check that the package can now be installed with dpkg
--force-depends.

This was due to a bug in the patch to gdk-pixbuf for ia32-libs compatibility
in 11.04, resulting in failures to search the correct directory. I don't
know why this regressed between 10.10 and 11.04, but for 11.10 the patch has
been dropped completely, in favor of searching the multiarch directories.

If you are interested in trying the 11.10 beta, you should be able to
install the sos package directly via multiarch, with no dpkg --force
options, no ia32-libs package, and no plugin path issues for gdk-pixbuf.

Sorry, this is not quite true. I see that the sos package depends on
libreadline5 and libncurses5, libraries which have not yet been converted
for multiarch in oneiric. So you would still need to install with dpkg
--force-depends, and install ia32-libs if you want to use the
/usr/bin/soscmd tool.

But the gdk-pixbuf path issue is certainly fixed.
