Bug Description

After a clean install of Ubuntu 8.10 AMD 64 on a Thinkpad T61 CTO-7658, there is a constant internal clicking noise, which appears to be coming from the hard drive, at various intervals: 10 seconds, 20 seconds, etc...The problem does not appear if upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10.

Comment:

I have a similar problem; I occasionally (every few minutes) hear a two-stage clicking noise "clack-click" that _might_ be the hard drive head parking/unparking.

If it is possible to somehow log this event we can confirm that it is indeed the head parking/unparking - how can we log this?

Thy Quest: Could you issue the following command at the command line "sudo lshw", then search for "SAMSUNG" to see if see if we have the same hardware. This will help confirm where the problem lies.

affects: ubuntu → hdparm (Ubuntu)

There are various cases where hard-drives make strange sounds, sometimes the drive is slightly "broken" and the vendor usually agrees to a full replacement if the drive is still under maintenance. Sometimes certain settings can cause such a thing.

Can you look at the description and proposed workaround at http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_hard_drive_clicking and report back if any of those help your case here?

That link is broken.

In my case I'm fairly sure the drive is not broken - the noise only occurs when the laptop is running on batteries, hence I think this is head park/unpark that occurs in power-save mode.

I'll soon be installing 9.10, so I can confirm the problem still exists then.

...err, make that: "my internet connection is terrible and the link timed out".

I can confirm the problem still exists on Ubuntu 9.10, however I think it might not be the hard drive (in my case), but rather the DVD multi-drive.

I'll open a new bug for this as it's clearly unrelated to the above.

I can't tell if the noise is the DVD drive or the hard drive.
