Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

When printing out of evolution, the scaling of the message is not visible. For example scaling to 160% will result in a printed message of 160%. The problem is that because it's not visible (directly in the print preview) the option is quite useless.

Hello,

I'm not sure if what I reported is a bug, but it's certainly unhandy.

Thank you for your bug. What do you mean? The preview is not updated to reflect the change? Or you would like to get the number written?

Hello Sebastien,

I mean the preview is not updated to reflect the change. So it's a
matter of luck to get the scale right. It's very unhandy. If you want to
print a text larger than in your mail you can ofcourse adjust the
fontsize and than print but if you want to print a picture you are in
the dark as to how much you should scale it! In windows this is done by
the printer-software you install with the printer. I don't know if this
is also the case with ubuntu. Does ubuntu take care of print tasks
completely or should the printer-manufacturer come up with a solution?

anyways thanks for your time!

take care,

Friedhelm

I can repeat this on Evo 2.11.92/E-D-S 1.11.92. I do not see any options to show either an updated preview image when re-scaling, or even the first preview after re-scaling.

Will look upstream.

Still an issue with evolution 2.12 ?

Yes, I would say so. I think this can be raised to wishlist, and an upstream set (also as wishlist) if not yet there.

The problem here is that Evo does the scaling/print preview as fire & forget: it calls the rendering, and closes the dialog (so there is no way of going back and re-scaling except by opening the print dialog again, and re-scaling).

I will do it in a few.

looked for, and did not find, any similar bug upstream. Opened http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=505448, and linked here. I also set the Importance to 'wishlist'.

This bug is not Evolution's, as far as I can tell, but a bug of the Gnome printing subsystem. In fact, I was doing some checking before I filed a bug for Evince, which is where it bit me. It might have to do with the postscript generation, because print-to-PDF does not scale the output file at all.

So, as reported above, it is inconvenient because you cannot see the effect of zoom until you print to dead-tree.

And if you print to file and select PDF output, there is no scaling in the output file, which makes scaling totally useless in this case.

Oh, and even when printing to dead tree, in case of enlargement, there is no option to select the cropping, which makes it also very useless (but I'd say this is a different bug).

Whoever has the power to do it, please attribute this but to wherever it belongs in the gnome printing subsystem. I have set the "also affects" to gnome print; however, on doing it I got the surprising information that there is nobody upstream or downstream to take care of bugs in gnome print, which must be an error.
